The drain field — the dispersal field, in the language of the state rules — is where treated effluent leaves the system and returns to the soil. It's a set of trenches doing a job that depends entirely on the ground around them still being able to accept water. When that ability is gone, everything upstream backs up, and no amount of pumping the tank fixes it for long.

Fields fail for understandable reasons. Solids carried over from a tank that wasn't pumped gradually seal the trench walls. Hydraulic overloading — more water going in daily than the soil can take — saturates the field until it can't recover between cycles. Roots find the lines. Vehicles compact the soil above. Sometimes the field was simply undersized for the house from the beginning.

The important distinction is between a field that's failing and a system that's failing somewhere else. A collapsed distribution box dumping everything into one trench looks a lot like field failure from the yard, and it's a far cheaper fix. That's why an honest assessment opens the tank and the d-box before it condemns the field.

Good to know

  • Keep people and pets off surfacing effluent. It is raw sewage reaching the surface and it carries genuine exposure risk, whatever it looks like.
  • Reduce water use immediately while you wait for an assessment. Every load of laundry sends more water into a field that has already stopped keeping up.
  • Repairs need a Construction Authorization from the county, and where your permit already has an approved repair area, that's typically all that's needed rather than a new Improvement Permit.
  • Additives sold as drain field 'restorers' are not a substitute for a diagnosis. Be skeptical of anything promising to rejuvenate a clogged field from inside your toilet.
  • Never drive or park on the field, before or after repair. Soil compaction is one of the causes of failure, not just a consequence.

Can a failed drain field be restored, or does it have to be replaced?

It depends entirely on why it failed. Root intrusion, a collapsed distribution box, a clogged effluent filter, or a broken line can often be repaired in place. Soil that's been sealed by years of solids carryover generally cannot be — the absorptive capacity is gone, and the fix is new trenches in the reserved repair area. A proper assessment distinguishes the two before anyone quotes you.

Why is the grass over my drain field so green?

Because it's being fertilized and irrigated by effluent that's reaching the root zone instead of staying where it belongs. On a healthy field you generally can't pick the trenches out by looking at the lawn. A sharply defined green stripe means liquid is rising closer to the surface than it should, and it's often the earliest visible warning — noticeable months before anything backs up indoors.

It only gets soggy when it rains a lot. Is that still a problem?

It's a meaningful signal. A field with reserve capacity handles a wet week without surfacing. One that only fails under heavy rain is a field operating with no margin — the soil is already near saturation in normal conditions. It usually gets worse rather than better, and it's a much better time to have the conversation than after a backup.

Will pumping the tank fix a failed field?

It buys time, sometimes several weeks, and it's worth doing because it also tells you something diagnostically. But if the field itself has lost absorptive capacity, the relief is temporary by definition — you've emptied the tank, not restored the soil. If you're pumping every month or two to stay ahead of backups, you're paying for a field replacement in installments.
